Most marketers figured that ChatGPT would radically change the search landscape someday: According to research conducted by Semrush “SearchGPT vs. Google and Bing: An Analysis of 5,000 Unique Queries,”that someday is here. Among the many insights are:
1. ChatGPT search (the ChatGPT function based on organic search) tends to include results from smaller organizations than either Google or Bing. ChatGPT Search is looking for quality and relevance over popularity and tends to go deeper into search results than other search engines. In the process of delivering better results, this helps level the playing field for smaller companies.
2. An increasingly larger share of referral traffic is coming from ChatGPT. You can see this for yourself in detailed Google Analytics Acquisition reporting. Referral traffic coming from a domain with “oai” in the URL, i.e. “oaiusercontent.com” is coming from ChatGPT. Some rather highly trafficked sites such as cloudflare.com, now have more referral traffic from ChatGPT than Google—for others, such as LinkedIn, the traffic volume is close to even.
3. The top industries that are capitalizing on ChatGPT traffic are: online services, education, mass media, information technology, and computer software and development. As you can see—these industries are tech heavy. This means that if your market is tech-related, you need to focus on ChatGPT.
4. ChatGPT is also significantly more popular with 18–24-year-olds than Google (46.7% v. 24.7%) and it tends to skew more male than female.
This is an excellent study, with a number of succinct charts and graphs, that includes suggestions for incorporating this data into marketing efforts. It’s definitely worth the 12-minute read!
