Scaling World Class Marketing Down for Small Businesses

The Hawke Marketing Method[1]-created by super-marketer Erik Huberman- is meant for larger businesses, but a smart marketer could scale the system down for any small business. The method is based on the following 3 pillars of a tripod.

1.  Creating Awareness: The goal is to let your prospects know you exist, what you offer, and how you can solve their problems. There are many tools available to accomplish this: from media releases, to search optimization, to social media. Creating some degree of awareness is not challenging for most marketers.

2.  Nurturing Leads: This involves moving leads through the sales funnel—from awareness to conversion. It does require expertise and strategy—most of all it requires discipline. This is also the area where individual marketers and marketing teams struggle the most. It involves tough decision-making, i.e. which leads to continue following up on and which leads to let go.

3.  Building Trust: Trust is one of the biggest drivers of sales—this is especially true for high-end products and services. Companies build trust through case studies, references, industry credentials, and verifiable track records.

At the core of all three pillars are analytics. It’s not possible to gauge the effectiveness of any of this without regular analytics. It’s the only way to know what is and isn’t working, what to maintain, when to pivot and where to pivot to.

The biggest obstacle in scaling this system down for a small business is the advertising expense. However, an excellent analytics-based organic search strategy (which is where we come in) could compensate for much of this.
