Why Use ChatGPT and Some Tips for Using It

So why use ChatGPT instead of one of the other generative AI tools available?  I am always looking for platforms that have a proven track record of continuous improvement such as HubSpot, Semrush, and ChatGPT. Being able to master one platform in each area without having to switch when a better one comes along, is a major time (and sanity) saver. As the Rick Pitino quote at the bottom of every page of this website goes, "Excellence is the unlimited ability to improve the quality of what you have to offer."  ChatGPT does that.

Unlike most other generative AI tools, ChatGPT, which is operated by OpenAI, was not only a pioneer, but has made significant meaningful improvements to this platform since it was first launched in Nov. 2022. As a spin-off of OpenHPC (formed in 2015), they have a lot of experience with developing very useful, sophisticated, yet user-friendly platforms that remain highly relevant over the long term.

People who say that ChatGPT and other generative AI tools aren’t useful, just don’t know how to leverage them. So here are a few tips.

1.  Providing context in the request enhances the quality of responses. If you’re working on a project, include relevant background information. You can even add a link to your own website and ask ChatGPT to take the information on your website into consideration in its response.

2.  Refining responses is also key. If the first reply isn’t quite right, ask for adjustments. Requesting a simpler explanation, a different tone, or a more structured response can improve the output.

3.  If you need information presented in a specific way, ask for it in a particular format. You can request summaries, lists, structured outlines, social media-friendly content and even a quiz. If you don’t want bulleted lists in the response, say so in the prompt.

4.  Advanced capabilities like file analysis, coding support, and real-time web searches add further value. 5.  If you frequently perform similar tasks, create reusable prompt templates.

It’s best to think of communicating your needs to ChatGPT in the same way you would ask a human expert. If the response isn’t quite right, just be more specific. If it’s too technical, ask for a simpler explanation by including a grade level i.e. “Please explain X in a way that a 6th grader would understand.” As I’ve mentioned before, ChatGPT will probably save you time, but that shouldn’t be your goal. Your goal for using ChatGPT should be to create something better than either you or ChatGPT could create alone.
